NFC North Preview

With the NFL lockout coming to an end, sports betting handicappers are beginning to look at the futures odds for their favorite teams. Last season, the NFC North shocked many NFL betting lines enthusiasts, as not only did the Green Bay Packers win the Super Bowl, but they defeated NFC North rival the Chicago Bears in the NFC Championship game to do so. Here is a preview of the top division in the NFL in 2010, the NFC North.

Green Bay Packers – Last season was an emotional one for the eventual Super Bowl Champions. During the first three weeks of the season, the Packers lost 11 of their first string players, and had to spend the next 15 weeks with a make shift roster. As a result, quarterback Aaron Rodgers was forced to finally take his game to another level in order to guide the team to success, and Head Coach Mike McCarthy needed to rally his troops all year long.

What can’t be under appreciated is the emergence of linebacker Clay Matthews during last season’s Championship push. Matthews was an absolute force for the Packers, and made opposing teams quarterbacks look foolish. Heading into this season, the Packers are an obvious choice for a repeat as division champion.

Chicago Bears – The Bears went from a team that infuriated its fans, to one that came within a win of going to the Super Bowl. Despite guiding the team to their best finish since the 2007 Super Bowl, Jay Cutler will be under a lot of pressure this season, after he failed to play out the NFC Championship game due to a leg injury. Cutler was accused by players around the league of quitting on his team, and will need to put in another strong effort this season, to prove his critics wrong.

Detroit Lions – After a couple of years of rebuilding and putting together a youthful core, the Lions appear ready to take the next step in making it back to the playoffs. Detroit owns one of the scariest young defensive lines in the NFL, as they drafted Nick Fairley to compliment Ndamukong Suh. If Matthew Stafford can stay healthy, the Lions should be able to win at least eight games this season.

Minnesota Vikings – With Brett Favre gone, the Vikings can finally play some team oriented football. Running back Adrian Peterson will be forced to carry the offensive load, as Sidney Rice looks to test the free agency market, and Christian Ponder is a very raw quarterback with plenty to learn. Do not be surprised if Minnesota has one of their worst seasons win loss wise since they drafted Peterson a few years ago.

NFL Parlay Betting

In the world of NFL betting lines handicapping, the first suggestion you’ll hear from most ‘how to’ articles, is to limit the amount of teams you include in your wager. For casual bettors, this may mean placing five different bets, on five different games. However, for most sharp bookie software bettors, this usually means playing a single bet called a parlay. In weeks one and 17 of the season, parlays receive a ton of action, and here is why.

For those new to exotic sports betting, parlays are a single bet, spread out over a few games. In football, the most common parlay is to make a five team parlay, which requires, that you take five teams in five games, and all five teams must win in order for your bet to be declared a winner. Unlike an if bet where the money from each victory is carried over and placed for the next team in the parlay, your basic parlay requires that every team win in order for you to win. In other words, you won’t be refunded the money from the first team that wins if the second team in your parlay loses. Instead, if you win four of your five games, you lose your NFL parlay completely, because that fifth team didn’t pull its weight and win.

In theory, parlay’s can be both good and bad when placing a wager. On the one hand, a parlay containing five teams can make you as much if not more money then if you were simply making five different bets. At the same time, if you lose a parlay, you won’t receive any payout, regardless of how any of the teams do. For instance, if you spread your money into five separate bets and four teams won, you would four out of five times. Yet, if you made a five team parlay and four teams won and the fifth one lost, your bet would still be a loss.

NFL Week 15 Picks

Week 15 of the NFL betting lines season is set to start later tonight, when the Atlanta Falcons renew hostilities with the Jacksonville Jaguars. We’ve said every week since about week 11 that this is the most important week of the season, however, with several playoff spots still up for grabs after a wild week 14, bookie software agents are certain this is the most important week of the season. Here are a few picks for week 15.

Cincinnati Bengals at St. Louis Rams – After hanging on to the sixth and final playoff spot in the AFC up until last weekend’s loss to the Houston Texans, the Cincinnati Bengals are now facing a must win game against the St. Louis Rams. This game should benefit the Bengals, who have had all week to practice, while the Rams are playing on shortened rest, after getting killed in the Monday Night game against rivals Seattle. In order for the Bengals to make the playoffs, they need a convincing victory here and a New York Jets loss to stand a chance at the final playoff seed.

San Francisco 49ers at Pittsburgh Steelers  - Despite locking up the fifth wild card spot a few weeks ago, the Pittsburgh Steelers will be desperately trying to win against the San Francisco 49ers in this game. The Steelers may or may not have the services of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, which by all accounts could be a huge problem, come playoff time. During last week’s Thursday night affair against the Cleveland Browns, the man known as Big Ben crumbled to the floor after sustaining a high ankle sprain. Although he finished the game, one has to wonder if the coaching staff for the NFL Steelers made the right choice putting him back in the game.

How To Bet The NFL Playoffs

With the NFL betting lines regular season coming to a close this weekend, fans and handicappers alike, are already looking ahead to next weekend’s schedule, when the playoffs get underway. We started out with 32 teams, but are now down to 12. Today, for your bookie software pleasure, we’ll be looking at why the playoffs are the most exciting time of the year.

The one major difference between regular season and playoff games in the NFL is that if you win you continue on, but if you lose, you go home. For this reason, most handicappers and analysts unofficially throw out the trends from the regular season, as literally the team with the best game plan can win on any given night. The best example of this took place a season ago, as NFL bookies had the New Orleans Saints as a 21-point favorite over the lowly Seattle Seahawks. Despite being a heavy underdog, the Seahawks who had entered the playoffs with a losing record, came up with a brilliant game plan, to stop the Saints offense. As a result, Seattle destroyed New Orleans, before getting eliminated them in the second round.

As handicappers ourselves, one of the trends we like to take a look at, is a teams success in the final stretch of the regular season. Essentially, capping every team from weeks 11 to 17 provides you with a good idea of which teams are for real, and which were fortunate to start out hot in the beginning of the season. For instance, the Detroit Lions have quietly put together a strong second half to the season, as they have killed opponents. The Lions started off the season with five wins, before dropping their next five games. But in the final six games of the season, the Lions have gone undefeated.

NFL Week 13 Picks

Week 13 of the 2011 NFL betting lines season is set to kickoff later today, when the Philadelphia Eagles travel to Seattle to take on the Seahawks. For the first time in easily the last five years, week 13 represents a huge test for many teams, as they attempt to use their bookie software data to out play their opponents. Week 13 is also the time of year when the contenders truly distinguish themselves from the pretenders. Here are a few picks to keep an eye on.

Kansas City Chiefs V Chicago Bears – The Chiefs and Bears meet in the first and likely only Kyle Orton Bowl, as both teams were in the Orton sweepstakes only two weeks ago. After losing his starting job in Denver, Kyle Orton believed a deal was worked out for him to return to the Bears and help guide them to their second consecutive NFL playoffs experience. Unfortunately for Orton and the Bears, the Kansas City Chiefs swooped in to claim Orton on waivers once their starter Matt Cassel sustained a season ending injury. In theory, this game could allow Orton a bit of revenge, as he looks to show the Bears coaching staff, what they gave up in the Jay Cutler deal. Pick: Kansas City came within a Dwayne Bowe leap of knocking off the Steelers last weekend, that is something to build off of.

Cincinnati Bengals V Pittsburgh Steelers – The Cincinnati Bengals have been one of the surprise teams in 2011, as rookies Andy Dalton at quarterback and AJ Green at wide receiver have given the Bengals an opportunity to make the playoffs this season. On the other side of things, the Pittsburgh Steelers are reeling, after narrowly escaping Kansas City last week, while losing defensive star Troy Polomalu to injury. This week, the Bengals will be looking for revenge, as they try and save the playoff hopes, during their biggest game of the year. Pick Bengals.
