The Patriots played all of their games from 1971 to 2001 at Foxboro Stadium, but it became clear that the stadium was out of touch with the more modern venues of the rest of the league. Gillette Stadium took almost two years to build, and it has a capacity of 68,756. They used grass at Gillette Stadium for the first four years of its existence from 2002 to 2006, but since then, they’ve installed FieldTurf. Gillette Stadium isn’t just used by the Patriots, as the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer are also tenants there. The Patriots have hosted a number of important games there as they’ve built themselves into one of the dominant teams of the NFL, while the 2002 MLS Cup was also held here, and four games of the 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup. It hosted the NCAA’s lacrosse championships in 2008 and 2009 and will do so again in 2002. Gillette Stadium is also in the running to be a venue if the United States win their bid to host the World Cup in 2018 or 2022. Gillette Stadium is a modern stadium, but it’s just small enough that fans can create a raucous atmosphere, and the Patriots love it (New England has won seven of their eight playoff games at Gillette Stadium, with the first loss coming last year to Baltimore). Any time they play at Gillette Stadium, look for the Patriots to be a betting favorite in your sports book. |
